How to Become a District of Columbia Notary:
Compared to other states, District of Columbia has few eligibility requirements to become a notary. The process is simple and affordable (from $25.00) for a four-year District of Columbia notary term. To become a notary in District of Columbia, you must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be a District of Columbia resident for income tax purposes and claim the District of Columbia residence as your primary residence on state and federal tax returns
- Be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident
- Be able to read, write and understand the English language
- Not be disqualified to receive a commission under section ARS §41-271
- Download the Notary Public Reference Manual from Secretary of State’s website
If you meet these qualification requirements, follow the steps below to become a District of Columbia notary

Order a four-year, $5,000 District of Columbia notary bond. All District of Columbia notary applicants are required to be bonded during the four-year term of their District of Columbia notary commission. Click here to purchase a notary bond.

Mail your completed forms and fee to the state. Mail the completed District of Columbia notary application, the notary bond, notarized oath of office form, and a processing fee of $43.00 to the District of Columbia Secretary of State.

Order a notary stamp and a notary journal. Once approved as a District of Columbia notary, forward us a copy of the notary commission certificate so we can prepare your notary stamp and any other notary supplies you ordered.
